News from the Social Economy in Europe

Dear friends of the Solidarity Economy,

there is a new opportunity for strong European initiatives for the Social and Solidarity Economy in Europe. Between 2009 and 2014, Michel Barnier made great progress on EU rules for the Social Economy, with the support of some of us MEPs. Unfortunately, in the last EU Commission, there was hardly any support for a continuation of the agenda. Now, however, Luxembourg has proposed, with Nicolas Schmit, a former minister as EU Commissioner, who has long been committed to the Social Economy. Ursula von der Leyen now wants to make him the new EU commissioner for jobs. I have already spoken to him and he is determined to continue his work for the Social Economy. We should all support this together.

Therefore, the Parliament’s new cross-party “Intergroup” on Social Economy is gaining importance. This group must now be reconstituted. The more MEPs join our intergroup in the coming weeks, the better we can take advantage of the new opportunities. So to all of you who know MEPs: Talk to them! (Here is the signup form)

I would also like to draw your attention to an upcoming event initiated by my colleague Nicola Beer (Renew). The title of the event is somewhat unfortunate, but the concern is very important and Nicola Beer’s initiative is very welcome: We must overcome obstacles for non-profit associations and foundations that want to get involved and organized across Europe. I would like to share the invitation to this welcome event on “Single Market for Philanthropy” next week in Brussels. All information can be found below.

With solidary greetings
Sven Giegold
