Malta’s Prime Minister Muscat resigns: Malta’s chance for a fresh start

It has just been announced that Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat will resign shortly. This step was overdue. Following recent revelations and arrests in his immediate vicinity, Muscat is finally taking responsibility, two years after the murder of government-critical journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

“Joseph Muscats resignation was long overdue. But his resignation must not be a substitute for a comprehensive investigation into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Financial crime and corruption on the island must end. Those responsible must be identified and convicted. We owe this not least to Daphne and her family. Joseph Muscats resignation is also due to the international and Maltese journalists who continued Daphne’s work after her death and the immense public pressure, especially from Malta’s civil society. Muscat’s resignation today could be a fresh start for Malta. Malta needs a new business model without financial crime and tax dumping that will be sustainable in the long run.”
